Saphir Schmuck als Symbol für Weisheit, Treue und Schutz

Saphire gehören zur Mineralgruppe der Korunde und bestehen chemisch aus Aluminiumoxid, dem geringe Mengen an Titan und Eisen jene unverwechselbare blaue Farbe verleihen. Die bedeutendsten Fundorte liegen in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Kaschmir und Madagaskar, wobei der tiefblaue „Kornblumenblau"-Saphir aus Kaschmir als besonders begehrt gilt. 

Bereits in der Antike wurden Saphire von Persern, Griechen und Römern verehrt. Man glaubte, sie schützten vor Neid und Unheil. Im Mittelalter trugen Geistliche und Könige Saphire als Symbol für Weisheit, Treue und göttliche Gunst. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurden Saphire zu einem festen Bestandteil europäischer Kronjuwelen und aristokratischer Schmuckstücke. 

Weltweite Aufmerksamkeit erlangte ein ganz besonderer Saphir im Jahr 1981, als Prinz Charles Prinzessin Diana einen ovalen Ceylon-Saphir von 12 Karat, umgeben von 14 Diamanten, als Verlobungsring überreichte. Dieses ikonische Stück, heute am Finger von Prinzessin Kate, gilt als der bekannteste Saphirschmuck der Welt und löste einen bis heute anhaltenden Trend für Saphir-Verlobungsringe aus. Heute werden Saphire sowohl in klassischen als auch in modernen Schmuckdesigns verwendet und stehen nach wie vor für Eleganz, Beständigkeit und Treue.

Die Farben des Saphirs: Mehr als nur Blau

Obwohl das tiefe Kornblumenblau als klassisches Markenzeichen des Saphirs gilt, ist diese Edelsteinfamilie weit vielfältiger, als viele vermuten. Alle Farbvarianten von Korund, dem Mineral, aus dem Saphire bestehen, werden als Saphire bezeichnet, mit einer Ausnahme: Rote Korunde tragen den eigenständigen Namen Rubin. Die übrigen Farben bilden ein beeindruckendes Spektrum:

  • Blauer Saphir: Der Klassiker, von zartem Hellblau bis tiefes Marineblau. Die edelsten Exemplare aus Regionen wie Kaschmir, Sri Lanka und Myanmar bestechen durch ein samtig leuchtendes Blau mit einem feinen Hauch ins Violette. 
  • Padparadscha-Saphir: Eine der seltensten und begehrtesten Saphirvarianten. Seine Farbe erinnert an die Blüte einer Lotosblume oder an einen Sonnenuntergang: ein zarter Mix aus Rosa und Orange. 
  • Gelber & Oranger Saphir: Diese farblich eng verwandten Varietäten verdanken ihre warmen Töne Spuren von Eisen im Kristallgitter. Sie reichen von zartem Goldgelb bis zu leuchtendem Sonnenorange und sind besonders in der modernen Schmuckgestaltung sehr beliebt.
  • Grüner Saphir: Grüne Saphire reichen von zartem Mint- und Olivgrün bis hin zu sattem Waldgrün. Ihre Farbe entsteht meist durch Spuren von Eisen im Kristallgitter. Sie wirken besonders natürlich, elegant und etwas ungewöhnlicher als klassische blaue Saphire. In Schmuckstücken harmonieren sie besonders schön mit Gelbgold, Roségold und Diamanten.
  • Rosa & Violetter Saphir: Die Grenze zwischen Rosa-Saphir und Rubin ist fließend – sie wird durch den Sättigungsgrad der Farbe definiert. Violette Saphire bestechen durch ihre kühle, mystische Ausstrahlung und werden häufig als edle Alternative zu Amethysten verwendet.
  • Farblose und sehr helle Saphire: Farblose oder nahezu farblose Korunde werden als weiße Saphire bezeichnet. Sie gelten als natürliche und oft günstigere Alternative zum Diamanten und überzeugen durch ihren reinen, klaren Glanz.
  • Stern- & Schwarzer Saphir: Stern-Saphire zeigen durch das Phänomen des Asterismus einen seidigen, sechsstrahligen Stern auf der Oberfläche. Schwarze Saphire wiederum bestechen durch ihren geheimnisvollen, tiefen Glanz.

Saphir Schmuck in Form von Ringen, Ohrringen und Ketten

Ringe sind wohl die bekannteste Bühne für den Saphir. Neben dem klassischen Solitär in Krappenfassung sind vor allem Pavé Ringe beliebt, bei denen kleine Diamanten den Saphir wie ein funkelnder Halo umgeben und seine Farbe noch intensiver wirken lassen.

Ohrringe mit Saphiren reichen von schlichten, zeitlosen Steckern mit einem einzelnen runden Saphir bis hin zu prachtvollen Chandelier-Ohrgehängen, bei denen Saphire in verschiedenen Blautönen in mehreren Kaskaden fallen und bei jeder Bewegung funkeln.

Ketten und Anhänger bieten dem Saphir oft die schönste Bühne: Ein einzelner, tropfenförmiger Saphir als Anhänger an einer feinen Goldkette wirkt zeitlos elegant. Aufwendige Rivièreketten mit gleichmäßig gestuften Saphiren zählen dabei zu den kostbarsten Stücken klassischer Juwelierkunst.

Armbänder mit Saphiren existieren sowohl als flexible Tennisarmbänder, bei denen abwechselnd Saphire und Diamanten aufgereiht sind, als auch als starre Armreifen, die einen einzelnen, großen Saphircabochon als zentrales Element in den Mittelpunkt rücken.

Broschen gehören zu den ältesten Trägern des Saphirs in der europäischen Schmuckgeschichte. Besonders in der viktorianischen Ära wurden Saphire in aufwendigen Sternen- oder Pfauenmotiven gefasst, wobei das tiefe Blau des Steins den Kontrast zu funkelnden Diamantenumrandungen bildete.
